Winter dictates its terms, and unfortunately, for the inhabitants of our water bodies, these conditions are often deadly. The formation of an ice cover blocks the supply of atmospheric oxygen, leading to oxygen starvation and, consequently, mass fish deaths – winter kill. The problem is exacerbated by the presence of humic substances and iron oxide in the water, the oxidation of which also consumes oxygen.
Why is this important?
The total isolation of the water body under an ice shell creates an anaerobic environment. Fish deprived of oxygen experience severe stress, weaken, and die. In addition to the obvious damage to the ecosystem, the kill leads to economic losses and threatens the populations of valuable species.

One of the most effective methods of preventing winter kills is the creation of artificial holes that ensure the influx of oxygen and gas exchange.
Technology for carrying out work: instructions for professionals!
- Determining the optimal location: It is necessary to consider the area of the water body and its depth. It is recommended to place holes both in the central part and around the perimeter, in places with a depth of unfrozen layer of at least 50-60 cm. Approximate quantity: 3-5 holes per hectare.
- Tools: Ice picks, shovels, and motorized ice drills are used to create holes (with strict safety measures in place).

Effective methods for maintaining holes in working condition:
1. Use of natural materials: Bundles of tightly bound reeds, bulrush, or other hollow-stemmed plants are placed in the hole. The capillary structure of these plants ensures constant gas exchange and prevents rapid freezing. ?
2. Use of technical salt: Bags of technical salt (sodium chloride, used for cleaning boiler equipment) are suspended in the hole. The dissolution of salt in water lowers the freezing temperature, allowing the hole to remain open for a long time. Recommended consumption: 5 kg per bag.
