Don't let the forest confuse you: rules from the Ministry of Emergency Situations for those who got lost
The forest is a source of clean air, berries, mushrooms, and peace of mind. But it can also become a serious challenge for an unprepared person. Every year, emergency workers go out to search for people lost in forested areas. Since the beginning of 2025, 62 people have gone missing in the Republic of Belarus, including 6 children.
To ensure that your walk does not turn into a disaster, remember and follow simple but vital rules. If you realize that you are lost – stop. The most important and common mistake is panic and aimless movement. Further movement without a clear plan usually leads deeper into the thicket and complicates the search for rescuers. If you clearly remember the direction from which you came, hear the noise of the road, voices of people or pets, and are confident that you can return – move on your own. If you understand that you will not be able to exit on your own – call the rescuers at 101 or 112, inform the dispatcher that you are lost, the approximate location from where you entered the forest, when you started your hike, describe what you see around, inform what you are wearing, and your last name, first name, and age. The main thing is – do not hang up. Stay connected, follow the rescuers' instructions. Conserve resources. Drink water in small sips, ration your food, do not eat unfamiliar berries, mushrooms, or plants – it is dangerous for your life!
Remember: your main task if you are lost is to wait for help in place and make it as easy as possible for rescuers to find you. Calmness, reasonable actions, and adherence to these rules are the key to your rescue!
