Historical minimum: in Belarus, teenage crime has decreased by 2.5 times over 11 years
In Belarus, juvenile crime has decreased by 2.5 times over the past 11 years. This was reported by Victoria Finovich, head of the department for supervision of the implementation of legislation on minors and youth of the General Prosecutor's Office, at a press center of BELTA.
The Prosecutor's Office coordinates the activities of all state bodies related to the prevention of juvenile crime. "This work is yielding results. This year we recorded a historical minimum of juvenile crime. Over the past 11 years, juvenile crime has decreased by 2.5 times. In 2025, this category committed only 1060 crimes, while in 2014 this figure was over 2.5 thousand crimes," - said Victoria Finovich.
She noted that the problem of involving children in committing crimes using information and communication technologies remains relevant. "In 2025, such crimes were committed by every ninth teenager. Mostly, these are extortions, frauds, deliberately false reports of danger, theft of property by modifying computer information. In addition, every second child was recognized as a victim of crimes committed on the internet. These also include frauds, extortions, theft of property by modifying computer information, blocking computer information (mobile phones). And this problem is usually rooted in the lack of proper parental control over children's internet use," - informed the head of the department.
Victoria Finovich reminded parents that as of January 17, amendments to the law "On the Rights of the Child" came into force, which impose on parents the duties to ensure the information security of children in terms of explaining to them the harm of information on the internet, controlling the use of internet resources, as well as applying various organizational and software means. "State bodies are obliged to provide parents with informational and consulting assistance. In our opinion, the changes should minimize the destructive influence of the internet on youth and increase parental responsibility. To improve the protection of children on the internet, prevention entities should activate and regularly conduct informational and explanatory work for teenagers and their parents on issues of preventing crimes using information and communication technologies, including on the internet. And such work should be conducted in popular social networks and messengers among youth," - she added.
