History of the origin of the streets of the town of Smalyany
Dear readers, we present to your attention a material related to the history of the famous agrotown Smalyany, which this year will become the capital of the district "Dazhynki". Today we will tell you the story of the origin of the streets of the agrotown.
In the modern agrotown Smalyany, there are 26 streets and one square. The street Arshanskaya is named after its geographical location. It is directed towards the Lepel road, which local residents use to reach the city of Orsha. The street Vasilionkovskaya got its name from a group of families with the surname Vasilionki, who used to live in this place. The street Vitebskaya was previously used as a direct road to the city of Vitebsk. Now, the residents of the agrotown no longer use this road, but it can be stated with certainty that it is directed to the north, where our regional center is located relative to Smalyany. The street Ganishavskaya is named so because it leads to the village of Ganishava.
The street Gornaya, the modern name of the street Galadranka (the popular name), got its name because it is located on a hill. However, it was called Galadranka since the times of collectivization because poor people lived there, who were often referred to as "galadrants". According to another version, which is very close to the first, the street was called Galadranka because during the times of collectivization (the 1930s), people moved from the farms to a permanent place of residence in an uninhabited area. By the way, the elderly residents of the modern agrotown know this street as Galadranka. And when guests of the agrotown occasionally ask the residents, only a few may suggest the name Gornaya, while 95% of the residents of the modern agrotown know Galadranka.
The street Tamasha Zana is named in memory of our famous romantic poet, who at one time led the secret societies of filomats and philarets during his studies at Vilnius University. The exile is buried in the Catholic cemetery in Smalyany, and the street shows the way to them. The street Lugovaya got its name because it runs along the meadow. The street Sergei Mikhailovich Mita is named in honor of a Hero of the Soviet Union. The streets Sloboda and Sloboda 1 are located in the area of the Alexeevskaya church. In the feudal era, slobodas and slobodkas were quite common – settlements that were temporarily exempt from taxes and duties. During the 17th and 18th centuries, they lost their specificity and transitioned into the category of ordinary villages or merged with cities.
The street Studencheskaya is named so because it leads to the Smalyany Agricultural College. The street Shkolnaya previously housed a school. The street Zaruchyevskaya got its name from the noun engagement. In the past, this street was called Vesyolaya by the people because noisy people lived there who could have fun for a long time. The street Dominikanskaya houses the Dominican Church of St. Mary.
The street Zamkovaya got its name because the "White Kovel" castle is located on it. The street Lesnaya stretches near the forest.
The street Molodezhnaya got its name because after the construction of new houses on it, it was settled by young families. The street Miru is named in honor of the peaceful policy of the state. The street Naberezhnaya runs parallel to the Dzyarnovka River, along its bank. The street Nadrechnaya got its name because it is located near the Dzyarnovka River. The street Polyovaya runs along the field. The street Parkovaya – along the park. The street Pashovaya houses the postal communication office. The street Pligavskaya got its name from the bird pligavka, which is found in these areas near the Dzyarnovka River. Another version of its origin comes from the name of a dance (jump in it). The street Sadovaya runs along the garden.
On the street Spasa-Preobrazhenskaya is the Spasa-Preobrazhenskaya Church. The street Talochinskaya got its name based on its geographical location: it is directed towards the road that leads to the city of Talochyn. Bazarnaya Square got its name because fairs are held there. This is the modern center of the agrotown Smalyany, and in the past – the center of the ancient settlement, where there were shops, a bakery, and cellars.
Thus, it can be concluded that local residents should know the history of the settlement where they have to live. Those knowledgeable about the history of their homeland can provide assistance to guests of the agrotown if necessary.
