Victory Day in Orsha began with a solemn rally

The festive day of May 9 in Orsha began at the Memorial Sign to the liberators of the city, where a solemn rally was held dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.

Thousands of residents of Orsha gathered at the obelisk to honor the memory of those who defended our Motherland. The solemn event began with a nationwide minute of silence in memory of the heroism of our people in the fight against the German-fascist invaders.

Time turns the pages of history, they go further and further away. But in the hearts of people lives the memory of that terrible, harsh, and great war.

With words of congratulations to all residents and guests of the city, the chairman of the Orsha District Executive Committee Igor Moroz addressed the audience. In his speech, he noted that the Orsha region remembers those who held back the enemy at the border near the Brest Fortress, near Minsk and Mogilev until the last bullet, those who were tortured in the Gestapo dungeons, those who burned in Khatyn and Trostenets. All whose blood has soaked every inch of our Belarusian land.

The Orsha region is the land of famous partisans and underground fighters. The land that found itself in the zone of hostilities from the first days of the war. The land where the first volleys of the legendary "Katyusha" were heard and where the famous partisan detachment commanded by Konstantin Zaslonov operated. The land that was one of the first to enter the Belarusian strategic offensive operation "Bagration" and won, won thanks to the unity of the people and the selflessness of our fellow countrymen.

Creative performances were given by the city amateur theater, the dance school "Vi-za-vi Kids," and the exemplary dance ensemble "Vi-za-vi."

As a tribute to the memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War, veterans of the war who did not live to see the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the chairman of the Orsha District Executive Committee Igor Moroz and the chairman of the Orsha District Council of Deputies Inna Khomutovskaya accompanied by representatives of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus laid a wreath at the Memorial Sign under a gun salute.
