The autonomous fire alarm (AFA) – an effective and reliable protection for your home!

From November 24 to December 14, a large-scale information campaign is taking place in the republic about the effectiveness of autonomous fire alarms and the necessity of their installation in homes and apartments.

Statistics show that autonomous fire alarms (AFA) are one of the most effective means of early fire detection. Last year alone, their activation saved the lives of 93 people, including 21 children, and since their mass introduction in 2002, more than 2780 people (in the first 10 months of 2025, 53 people were saved, including 12 children).

An autonomous fire alarm (AFA) is an automatic device that structurally combines in one housing:

a fire detection sensor (usually responding to smoke);

a sound alarm;

a source of autonomous power (a "crown" type battery).

It does not require connection to external systems: the AFA can independently detect signs of fire and immediately alert nearby people with a loud sound signal.

In the event of a fire, smoke rises to the ceiling and then spreads along it, so the most preferred location for the alarm is on the ceiling in the middle of the room. However, in situations with a stretch ceiling, it cannot simply be attached.

The installation of the autonomous fire alarm must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations specified in the operating documentation (passport).  An alternative placement on the wall is permissible. It is allowed to mount the alarm on a vertical surface — at a height of 10–30 cm from the ceiling.

Also, when installing the AFA, it is necessary to consider that it should not be placed closer than 50 cm to the corners of the room. This is because the junction areas of the walls are the least ventilated sections, and smoke reaches them significantly later, which may delay the activation of the device. Additionally, avoid installation near windows, ventilation, and air conditioners. Air currents can carry smoke away from the sensor, hindering its timely activation.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations recommends installing AFAs in every living space. A flashing red LED signal located on the AFA housing indicates its operability and being in standby mode. When smoke is detected, the AFA emits an intermittent sound signal with a constant red light. To stop the sound signal of the alarm, the source of smoke must be eliminated, and the room must be ventilated.

During the operation of the AFA, it is necessary to periodically clean the optical system of the device using a hairdryer (in cold mode) or a vacuum cleaner. Without disassembling the alarm, direct the air stream at the protective mesh of the optical element. The cleaning frequency should be at least once a year and after each false activation. It is also necessary to regularly replace the power element. The alarm will signal the need to do this with a constant short sound signal.

Remember: from the perspective of fire safety, AFAs installed in living spaces must be maintained in a functional and operable condition. Take care of yourself and your loved ones! In case of an emergency, call the number "101" or "112".
